La La Land | movie review

Here’s to the ones who dream, foolish as they may seem.

La La Land is going to win Oscar, y’all. Just saying.

It is everything I dreamed it to be and more. Not only is every frame gorgeous, the soundtrack is also amazing.

It was soft but not corny,  passionate but well-controlled, twinkly but not artsy-fartsy. It was just right.

In case you still haven’t heard of this movie, it is a modern Hollywood musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and directed by Damien Chazelle, the Oscar-nominated write and director of Whiplash.

👇It has many trailers, but here’s my fav one.

✨Synopsis

The plot of this movie is going to mess with my mind forever. It is so beautiful and pure, but it surprises the heck out of you. I have so much to say about the ending, but imma keep this spoiler free because I am a good child. 👼 🙏

Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) are two aspiring artists in LA. Sebastian is a jazz pianist who wants to open his own jazz club. Mia is an actress. They meet, scuffle and fall in love, and become the cutest thing ever. However, Sebastian is presented with the option of joining a jazz band led by Keith (John Legend) which tours non-stop, and Mia starts writing her own play. It becomes hard for them to stay together…

✨Style

I have loved Damien Chazelle’s style ever since Whiplash, and La La Land did not disappoint. The anamorphic shots, the stunning colour palette, the retro feeling- it’s just so beautiful.

✨The Musical Aspect

There once was a time when characters belting out songs and breaking into dancing was not weird or corny, but that time is certainly not our 21st Century. Granted, we had Glee and the Pitch Perfect movies, but they do not create the same mood as, say, Grease.

Luckily, Damien Chazelle was able to make La La Land classy, elegant, sparkly and almost nostalgic. So much of the movie is bent upon seamless flow and movements. When the characters danced, they did not seem out of touch. It was full of feelings and never too corny.

ALSO THE SONGS ARE SO CATCHY AND MELLOW AND BEAUTIFUL AND ANACHRONISTIC IT IS AMAZING. Who knew Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone could sing so well? They just both have the perfect jazz voices! Also, the fact that Ryan Gosling learned piano just for this movie… 💀💀💀

If you are not planning on watching the movie, here’s the soundtrack. 👇

Go to the cinema and support this daring, splashy and tenderly mind-blowing piece. Thank you.
